District welcomes SRO Wright

Students hand paper to police officer

Herkimer Central School District is pleased to welcome Officer Matt Wright of the Herkimer Police Department to serve in our schools as a School Resource Officer (SRO).

SRO Wright has been with the Herkimer PD for 12 years and will be working with students at Herkimer Elementary School. He joins SRO Shauna Jones, who has been working with the school district since the beginning of the 2017-18 school year. SRO Jones will now be focused on the Jr./Sr. High School.

SRO Wright is stationed inside the main lobby of the elementary school, where students can leave him Post-It note messages or drop a private message into his mailbox. SRO Wright was welcomed to the school during recent schoolwide assemblies about mindfulness.

The two school resource officers represent a partnership between the school district and the village of Herkimer. The officers work with school officials in a variety of ways. In addition to monitoring building and student safety, SROs work with teachers to educate students about personal safety. At the Jr./Sr. High School level, the SRO supports the school’s D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program and anti-drug curriculum.
