A Message from Mr. Robert Miller Superintendent

I would like to thank the Herkimer Board of Education for selecting me as the District’s new superintendent, and I believe together we can set the school on a path to excellence. I consider myself fortunate to have been given the opportunity to join a school with such a fine reputation for its quality educational services. I am grateful to those that have given me their time over the last month to assist me in my transition to Herkimer, and I can see already that this is a fine group of people I will be working with. In particular, I want to thank Mr. Kawryga, Interim Superintendent, for his service to the district this year and for his assistance helping me transition to Herkimer CSD.

I am looking forward to new and exciting challenges all of which this position offers, to me. Prior to coming to Herkimer CSD, I served as the Superintendent of Cherry Valley-Springfield CSD for the last four years and as a teacher for 17 years prior to that. I am anxious to get started on the new challenges, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the entire school community and the community at large to provide the children of our community with the best education the community can afford.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school community, and the community at large, for welcoming me to the District as we complete another successful year at the Herkimer Central School District. I am confident that with your continued support we will be able to foster a positive and respectful school environment where students will achieve their maximum potential.

SAANYS Recognizes Mrs. Carney as
Elementary School Principal of the Year

Kathleen A. Carney, Herkimer Elementary School, Herkimer Central School District

Carney has served as an educator with Herkimer for 20 years and has been an elementary-level administrator in her current position for 11 years. Carney previously served as an elementary teacher in Herkimer and as a school leader has played a significant role in Herkimer Elementary being named a "High Performing/Gap Closing" school under the No Child Left Behind Act in 2003-04, 2005-06, and 2006-07. She is a strong advocate for universal preK, early interventions, and the sustainability of these programs despite fiscal belt-tightening. She has mentored five teachers as they did their administrative internships and many of them are now successful principals, having had the benefit of Kathy’s tutelage and experience. In 2007, Kathy was recognized as a Herkimer County Cares Asset Builder for all of her good works, both in and out of the school.

As New York’s Elementary School Principal of the Year, Kathy will be celebrated as a National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals at a recognition program sponsored by NAESP and VALIC this fall in Washington, DC.
