Herkimer Elementary fourth-graders recently put their artistic talents to work in the National Garden Club’s Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl poster contest.

The school’s participation in the nationwide contest was organized by art teacher Heather Wheeler-Stapf and STEM teacher and Herkimer Garden Club president Leah Peyton. The contest promotes awareness of wildfire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles.

First place winner for HES was Amalia Yakimovich, with Vadim Donets  coming in second, Roselyn Nietes third, and an honorable mention for Carmen Mankouski. Amalia’s poster will go on to the regional competition for a chance at the national prize.
