Herkimer students join fight for state funding

Herkimer High School students joined the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) on Oct. 10 to rally local officials for an increase in state aid.

AQE organized rallies and a walk from New York City to Albany, which culminated Oct. 11, to advocate for funding the organization says is owed to public schools across the state.

“We are owed about $2.1 million dollars in foundation aid for 2016-17 and about $26.5 million over the last 9 years,” Herkimer Central School Superintendent Robert Miller said.  “While our local officials have been instrumental in advocating for the Herkimer CSD, the current funding formula does not offer the funds necessary to provide our students equitable opportunities compared to other areas of the state.”
