National Red Ribbon Week kicked off Oct. 24 at Herkimer Elementary with help from School Resource Officer Shauna Jones.
Jones spoke with elementary students about the history of the Red Ribbon campaign, and this year’s theme, “Your future is key, so stay drug-free.”
The Red Ribbon campaign is a national drug awareness effort that began in 1988 as an effort to encourage drug prevention activities across the country.
Throughout the Red Ribbon campaign at Herkimer Elementary, students from each of the fifth-grade classrooms will talk about positive changes as the “key” to a great future. Fifth-graders are working with Officer Jones as part of the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.
The campaign will conclude on Oct. 31 with a message from Herkimer Village Police Chief Michael Jory.
