School board hears solar energy proposal

The Herkimer Central School District Board of Education heard a proposal from SolarCity Corporation at its Sept. 28 meeting.

SolarCity is proposing to install a solar array behind the school bus garage near the elementary school. According to the company, the array would generate 1,179 kilowatts of electricity.

The proposal is part of the New York Power Authority’s K-Solar program, a partnership between NYPA, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the state Education Department that aims to make solar energy more accessible and affordable for public schools.

Under the proposal, the district would buy electricity from SolarCity, which would pay to install and maintain the solar array.
