Water notice refers to past issues

Herkimer Central School District residents may have been notified by mail recently of a past water quality issue that had impacted Herkimer Elementary School in 2017. This annual notification is required by the state Department of Health and does not reflect any current or ongoing issues with water at the elementary school.

In January and February of 2017, the town of Herkimer experienced water quality issues that affected local customers, including Herkimer Elementary School. During that period, boil-water notices were issued, including for the elementary school. School officials initiated procedures during that time to provide safe drinking water for students and staff, as has been done whenever there are water quality issues.

Since that time, the town instituted an auto-dial system to inform all those concerned (including area residents) of any water quality issues. In addition, district officials worked with the Herkimer BOCES safety office last year to set up a notification system for the school so that whenever there are water quality issues, procedures can be implemented to keep students safe.

At this time, the town of Herkimer indicates that the water at Herkimer Elementary is safe. The district is also in compliance with state regulations governing lead in water. Water test results are available on the district’s Lead Testing page. For more information, contact the district office at (315) 866-2230.
