Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018, workshop meeting

The workshop meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. in the Jr./Sr. High School Cafeteria by President Brian Crandall and the Pledge of Allegiance was said.

President Crandall welcomed members in the audience and staff members to this evening’s meeting.  He informed the Board that Mrs. Fischer and Mr. Petucci was unable to attend the meeting due to a family commitment.

President Crandall explained to all that the Board of Education sets aside time at each Board meeting to give those in the audience an opportunity to address the Board directly on any subject they wished to discuss.

He explained the BOE welcomes public comment and community input at meetings.  However, we caution that we are not authorized to engage in conversations pertaining to individual students, faculty, staff, or administrators.  Topics of this nature may only be discussed during executive session and must be coordinated with the Superintendent of Schools prior to a BOE meeting.

Approval of the Agenda

Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Miller, on a motion made by Ms. Gilbert, seconded by Ms. Giffune, the BOE approved the meeting agenda as submitted.  All voted in favor; motion carried 5:0.

Public Hearing:  District-wide School Safety Plan

Superintendent Miller provided the BOE with a review of the District-wide School Safety Plan.  He informed the BOE the only change to the plan was on Page 2; Identification of School Teams, the remainder of the document would remain unchanged.

Approval of the Minutes

Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Miller, on a motion made by Ms. Giffune, seconded by Ms. Gilbert, the BOE approved the regular meeting minutes of Wednesday, June 27, 2018 as presented.  All voted in favor; motion carried 5:0.

Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Miller, on a motion made by Mr. Conley, seconded by Ms. Gilbert, the BOE approved the annual reorganization/regular meeting minutes of Tuesday, July 10, 2018 as presented.  All voted in favor; motion carried 5:0.

Business Reports

2018-2019 BOCES Final Contract [AS-7]

Superintendent Miller reviewed the 2018-2019 BOCES final contract [AS-7] with the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES for its services to the Herkimer Central School District for a total contract costs of $4,114,406.76 effective July 2018.

Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Miller, on a motion made by Ms. Giffune, seconded by Mr. Conley, the BOE formally accepted the agreement as presented, and to authorize President Crandall to sign the agreement on behalf of the district. 2018-2019 Executive Committee Member(s)

Ms. Gilbert moved and Ms. Giffune seconded a motion for Robert Mihevc to serve as the Board’s representative on the Oneida-Madison-Herkimer Counties School Boards Institute’s Executive Committee. Mark Conley will serve as the alternate.  All voted in favor; motion carried 5:0.

Review/Establish 2018-2019 BOE Committee Appointments

President Crandall reviewed with the Board a listing of the proposed 2018-2019 Board Committee Assignments.  He reminded Board members that each Committee Chairman is responsible for scheduling meetings and preparing reports for their committee to present back to the entire Board during the 2018-2019 school year.

Review/Establish Proposed BOE Goals for the 2018-2019 school year

President Crandall reviewed a copy of suggested 2018-2019 Board Goals for consideration.  He asked if the BOE had any suggestions to forward them to him for discussion at a future meeting date.

NYSSBA Annual Convention Update/Bus Reservation

The 2018 99th Annual Convention & Education Expo is scheduled to be held in NYC.  Mr. Mihevc, Mr. Crandall, Mr. Conley and Superintendent Miller have been registered.  SBI has arranged transportation by bus.  Please contact Mrs. Judd if you wish to travel via the SBI bus.

On a motion made by Mr. Conley, seconded by Ms. Giffune, the BOE entered into an executive session for the purpose of discussing a particular student.  The Board may take action in public session after the executive session ends and the Board returns to public session.  All voted in favor; motion carried 5:0.

The Board moved into an executive session at 6:22 p.m.

President Crandall declared the public meeting reconvened at 7:15 p.m.

On a motion made by Mr. Conley, seconded by Ms. Gilbert the BOE adjourned the public 7:17 p.m.   All voted in favor; motion carried 5:0.
