Elementary students spread cheer to furry friends

Students hold pet food and other supplies

For students at Herkimer Elementary School, holiday giving wasn’t just for friends and family.

Instead of a student gift exchange, or gifts for their teacher, Sylvia Lowell’s fifth-grade students opted to bring in and collect donations for the Herkimer Humane Society.

Herkimer Elementary staff focused on random acts of kindness during December. Mrs. Lowell’s students wanted to give back, and felt the animal shelter would be a great way to do that.

“These abandoned and abused animals have no one, and they felt helping the Humane Society would bring the animals a little Christmas cheer,” HES Principal Renee Vogt explained.

Mrs. Lowell’s students also encouraged students in grades 3-6 to donate needed items as well.  They collected for a week before donations were picked up and delivered to the Humane Society.
