Holiday giving helps local families

Four stand behind Thanksgiving baskets

Thirteen Herkimer Elementary families will enjoy Thanksgiving dinners courtesy of Herkimer Girl Scouts Unit 62.

Each family selected was given a basket full of all necessary items to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner along with a $15 gift card.

Holiday giving is a tradition for Herkimer Elementary; the school is also participating in Operation Sunshine, a Christmas giving program sponsored by the Observer-Dispatch and organized locally through Catholic Charities of Herkimer County.

“This program is a valuable community resource, providing gifts for children on Christmas, helping to create special holiday memories for families in Herkimer County who are struggling to make ends meet,” HES social worker Kathy Orts explained.

Orts is coordinating the school’s participation in Operation Sunshine, collecting donations from faculty and staff to provide children with holiday gifts through the program.

Families in need can contact Operation Sunshine by calling 732-2379. This number will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday, Dec. 1.
