Beginning in the fall of 2016, Herkimer County Community College will require high school students to pay $53 per credit (or $159 per three-credit course) to receive college credit for College Now courses.
For the past two years, the college has offered these courses at no charge to students. Prior to that, students paid tuition rates similar to those now being required. However, Herkimer High School was recently informed by the college that state education law requires charging tuition College Now courses will be offered at a reduced rate of one-third the cost of in-state, part-time tuition.
College Now offers students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school, reducing college course loads and in some cases resulting in earlier graduating from college. Some families are able to save money on future tuition costs through the program. Students also gain experience in meeting college-level expectations, building confidence by starting college with credits already earned.
