‘Shop With A Cop’ helps make holidays bright

Police officers pose for a photo inside a store

Christmas came early for 13 Herkimer Elementary students on Tuesday, when officers from the Herkimer Police Department took them on a holiday shopping trip.

This year is the first time the police department has organized a “Shop With A Cop” event, which partners police officers, local business and families in need to help during the holidays.

Herkimer Elementary Principal Renee Vogt, Assistant Principal Cristi Paragi and Social Worker Kathy Orts helped connect families with the event so that children could pick out gifts for themselves and their families.

Herkimer Police Chief Mike Jory told the Times-Telegram that the shopping trip was funded by a grant from Wal-Mart after store manager Chris Beaulac approached the department with the idea.

Jory told WKTV that it meant a great deal to him and his officers to be able to give back to the community.

“Community means everything to us,” Jory said. “It means the world to us.”
