5 Herkimer students complete Fall 2025 Youth Leading Community Change Program

Five Herkimer Central School District seniors recently participated in the Fall 2025 Youth Leading Community Change Program sponsored by the Herkimer County Legislature.

“Throughout the program, the Herkimer students demonstrated maturity, initiative and a genuine commitment to public service,” Herkimer social studies teacher Laura Scalise said. “They had the unique opportunity to speak directly with members of the Herkimer County Legislature, meet with a variety of county agencies and gain insight into the issues, challenges and responsibilities involved in county governance.”

The program brings together motivated young leaders from across the county to learn first-hand how local government operates and how civic engagement can directly shape their communities. The Herkimer seniors who participated in the program were Johnny Xiao, Jaylyn Gregory, Logan DeCarlis, Cole Bolen and Ashton Scanlon.

A highlight of their experience was the development and presentation of a mock resolution addressing real concerns affecting Herkimer County, Scalise said.

Students in Scalise’s government class have also been engaged in a hands-on civics experience by writing and debating their own resolutions as part of a classroom Mock Congress.

“This activity is designed to deepen students’ understanding of how bills are crafted, discussed and passed at the national level,” Scalise said. “Through research, committee work and formal debate, students are gaining practical insight into the complexities of the legislative process and the importance of civic participation.”

Seniors in the class also recently had the opportunity to hear from Herkimer alumnus Jack Kozma, who recently completed Marine Corps boot camp. “Jack shared his personal journey, challenges and accomplishments during training – offering students an inspiring perspective on life after high school,” Scalise said. “His message emphasized that there are many meaningful and diverse paths available to young adults – whether through military service, higher education, trades or other career pursuits.”
