Running for the Board of Election

To be eligible to run for a seat on the Herkimer Central School Board of Education, candidates must be U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years old, who have lived within the district for at least one straight year before the election, and who can read and write.

Candidates cannot be employees of Herkimer Central School District, hold another public office such as superintendent, clerk, tax collector or librarian, or share a household with a current board member. Board candidates also cannot have been removed from any school district office within the year before the date of appointment or election to the board.

Nominating petitions are typically made available for prospective candidates by the district office on or around March 1. Candidates must obtain the signature of at least 25 qualified voters of the district, and must state the residence of each signer and the name and residence of the candidate on their petition. Petitions must be returned to the district clerk by mid-April for a candidate’s name to appear on the ballot in May.
