Each year on the third Tuesday in May, qualified voters across New York state head to the polls to vote on their school district’s budget proposal and board candidates.
In order to vote in school elections, a person must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, registered to vote, and a resident of the Herkimer Central School District for at least 30 days prior to the scheduled vote date. Residents who have registered to vote in general elections are automatically registered to vote in school elections. District residents who have not registered to vote in general elections may register to vote in school elections at the district office, or by calling (315) 866-2230.
Residents who are not be able to participate in a school election in person may contact the district office to obtain an application for an absentee ballot. Applications are due one week before the vote date if the ballot is to be mailed, or one day before the vote date if the ballot is to be picked up in person at the district office. All absentee ballots must be returned to the district office by 5 p.m. on the vote date.
