Eighth-graders earn honorable mentions

Five Herkimer middle school students earned honorable mentions in the annual New York Conference of Mayors’ “If I Were Mayor” essay contest.

Don Zhao, Marcela Hartman, Peter Mosny, Julian Ruffule and Zoey Caldwell will receive honorable mention certificates for making it to the final round of the contest.

In their essays, these students answered the question “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” and explained what they would want to do, why they would want to do it and how they would undertake each action, including how to fund their ideas.

Essays were judged on creativity, originality, development of actions, clarity, sincerity of thought and proper use of grammar.

The contest was open to any eighth-grade student enrolled in a school located in a city or village in New York state.
