Herkimer students win 4 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards

Three Herkimer Central School District students won a total of four awards in the 2023 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards, and their artwork will be on display at Onondaga Community College.

Herkimer senior Hannah Minguela, senior Lyla Williams and sophomore Jillian Hutchinson each won Silver Key Awards, and Williams also won an Honorable Mention.

“More than 4,000 pieces were submitted to this competition from all over Central New York, and Herkimer had four winning pieces,” Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School art teacher Heather McCutcheon said. “This is a big honor. We are the only school in Herkimer County that had work selected to be in this show.”

All pieces of art that won 2023 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards will be on display in the hallways of the SRC Arena and Events Center at Onondaga Community College through March 5. The 2023 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the same location.

Minguela’s winning piece was a sculpture made out of clay and recycled books.

“I am very thankful and happy to be accepted into this exhibit,” Minguela said.

Williams won her awards with an acrylic painting and a sculpture made out of cardboard and Crayola Model Magic.

“The Scholastics competition was a fun opportunity to present artwork,” Williams said. “It is also good to get two awards on behalf of my school.”

Hutchinson earned her award for digital art that she created on an iPad using the app Procreate.

“I feel very honored to have my work displayed,” Hutchinson said.
