Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School art teacher Heather McCutcheon recently hosted a webinar on social and emotional learning (SEL) featuring a lesson plan she created focusing on better mental health for her students. Her lesson plan, “Create Your Own Logo” (featuring the artwork of senior Emmi Baker), was also distributed worldwide by Nasco Education, a company that supplies teachers with hands-on learning tools.

During the webinar, McCutcheon also shared examples of SEL-infused art projects, and how teachers can incorporate the SEL core competencies in their projects to help students creatively express emotions.

McCutcheon said the lesson she presented during the webinar is currently being worked on by her freshman students.

The lesson includes multiple objectives where students focus on strengthening their self-awareness and relationship skills, creating a personal logo, and then using that logo to create artwork or a product.

“Students will think about what makes them unique, discuss and share with others, create a personal logo to represent their “brand,” and use that logo to create a work of art,” she wrote in the lesson plan.

“Learning more about each student will help strengthen teacher-student and student-student relationships and help students build social and emotional skills.”
