Food and nutrition students take field trip to orchard

A student picks apples at an orchardThe 17 students in the food and nutrition class co-taught by Mrs. Baker and Ms. Neff at Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School recently took a field trip to Sand Flats Orchard to learn about production strategies and how to properly pick crops.

The goal of the class is to connect students to how and where their food is grown and how to prepare easy, fresh meals.

October is also apple month in New York State.

“The students who attended where they were able to go through a corn maze, pick pumpkins, pick apples, go on a hayride tour of the farm, and end the day with fresh cider and cider donuts,” Baker said.Students hold their pumpkins for the camera

“Back at school, our first activity was to try two recipes of dehydrated apples, and this week we plan on making apple sauce with the apples from the orchard.”
