Herkimer 3rd graders create songs for Music March Madness competition

In celebration of Music in Our Schools Month and in the spirit of college basketball March Madness, Herkimer Elementary School third-grade classes created songs that competed in a tournament.

Herkimer Elementary School vocal music teacher William Pegg organizes the annual “Music March Madness” event for third graders.

Students wrote short songs in the style of famous classical music composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in music class with Pegg. Students in all grade levels were encouraged to vote for their favorite student-written songs as part of the competition.

Third grade teacher Jamie Roorda’s class won the competition and received a golden recorder as a trophy, along with a poster to commemorate the event and a class photo with a special guest: a standing illustration of Mozart.
