Herkimer student Izabella Vredenburg wins Voice of Democracy audio essay contest

Herkimer Central School District senior Izabella Vredenburg was recognized on Sunday, March 12, for her success in the Voice of Democracy audio essay competition put on by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Vredenburg won the Voice of Democracy district-level competition through the VFW Michael S. Pliseck Post 4915 in Herkimer and placed fourth in the state-level competition.

The theme for this year’s Voice of Democracy competition was “What a veteran means to me.” Herkimer 12th grade social studies students wrote and recorded audio essays for the contest through Herkimer teacher Laura Scalise’s class.

Vredenburg and Herkimer senior Ann Zhao were selected to advance to the local competition, and Zhao was also recognized during the event at the VFW in Herkimer.
