Herkimer student Melia Couchman wins pole vault championship at Nike Indoor Nationals

Herkimer Central School District senior Melia Couchman recently competed in the Nike Indoor Nationals and won the championship in the Girls Pole Vault Emerging Elite category.

The Nike Indoor Nationals took place from March 10-12 at the Nike Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood.

At the Nike Indoor Nationals, Couchman vaulted 12 feet, 4.5 inches, which was her personal best. The mark was also set a new Center State Conference league record, was the second highest all-time in Section III and the 24th highest all-time in the state for girls indoor track.

Couchman previously reached the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) State Championships on March 4 at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, and was recognized as an “All-State” pole vaulter.

Additionally, Couchman was a member of the Herkimer girls indoor track team that won the Center State Conference league championship and Section III sectional championship this school year. She won the individual league and sectional championships in pole vaulting and also won the sectional championship in long jump.
