Spotlight on: Cyndi St. James
Special Education Teacher
Q. What date did you start in the new role?
A. Sept. 1, 2025.
Q. What is your background experience that led to this position?
A. I have 25 years of experience working with youth in different capacities including case management, victim advocacy, residential facilities, foster care, homeless shelters and schools. All of this experience fueled my passion in helping youth and led me to return to school and earn my master’s degree in K-12 special education.
Q. What makes you excited about working in your new role at Herkimer CSD?
A. In my previous role as a school monitor for three years and a licensed teaching assistant (LTA) for eight, combined with my experience in human services, I truly have an unique appreciation and perspective for what is possible when youth are engaged and nurtured. I am beyond excited to finally have my own classroom within a district that puts ALL students’ needs first, regardless of circumstances.
Q. When did you first know you wanted become a teacher and what made you feel that way?
A. Working at my previous district for years as an LTA, I felt “stuck” not being able to do more for students. I struggled with “staying in my lane” because I am an advocate at my core and want to do as much as possible for kids. I finally decided in March of 2023 to apply for a master’s program through Grand Canyon University (GCU) and spent 2.5 years completing their program, including student teaching. I graduated in May of 2025, and here I am at Herkimer living my dream!
Q. What do you think makes Herkimer CSD special?
A. From day one, the entire administrative team has wowed me with their professionalism and realistic view of the students and their needs. Their decisions are rooted in what is best for all students in a way that never feels punitive. That leadership is invaluable and translates down to the rest of the faculty and staff. It is simple yet soooo effective, and I am thrilled to be part of this district.
