Students in the studio art and My Art 8 classes along with the art club have been busy creating coffee sleeves (that help insulate coffee drinkers’ hands from hot coffee) for the Java Shop in Herkimer. They’ve been using paints, markers, and colored pencils to design sleeves that feature positive quotes and themes like “winter.”

The students plan to deliver the sleeves at the end of January.

Teacher Heather McCutcheon said she reached out to the owner with the idea.

“The community involvement piece is very important,” she said. “They kids get a chance to reach out and learn more about the community.”

Freshman Kavonna White said she has really enjoyed working on the project.

“It’s cool to learn about the community and how we can help out the shop,” she said.

Alex Papaleo feels the same.

“It was great to able to use our creativity,” he said. “Also, it’s nice to support a local business.”
