March 21, 2024

Dear Parents/Guardians/Staff,

I hope this letter finds everyone doing well and enjoying the start of Spring.  At the time of this letter, the Herkimer Central School District has three (3) emergency/snow days remaining for the 2023-2024 school year.  If no more emergency/snow days are used, we will abide by the calendar changes listed below, allowing us to meet our 181 school day requirement.

In consultation with the Herkimer Police Department, Department of Transportation, Emergency Services, and State Police, the district will be closed for a FULL DAY on Monday, April 8th, 2024, due to the Solar Eclipse.   It is important to share that they are expecting heavy traffic from travelers getting off at the Herkimer Exit (30) and traveling north to view the total Solar Eclipse.  For this reason, April 8 will be used as one of the three days.  Mrs. Lister’s Earth Science students will still be taking the field trip to view the total solar eclipse that day, and more details will be shared regarding the trip and departure time.

In summary, please see the complete schedule of school closures below:

School closed (full day):

❖    Monday, April 8 – (Monday following Spring Recess/Solar Eclipse Day)

❖    Friday, May 24 – (Friday before Memorial Day)

❖    Tuesday, May 28 – (Tuesday after Memorial Day)

If we use one (1) of our remaining emergency/snow days, HCSD will be closed:

❖    Monday, April 8 – (Monday following Spring Recess/Solar Eclipse Day)

❖    Friday, May 24 – (Friday before Memorial Day)

❖    School WOULD BE IN SESSION ON TUESDAY, MAY 28

I hope this information helps for any future planning for our families.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the school.

Sincerely, Kathleen A. Carney Superintendent of Schools
