Terry Gordon teaches instrumental music at Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School.

What led you to become a teacher?

I want to open that whole world of music up to these kids. Before coming to Herkimer, I taught for many years at Mekeel Christian Academy in Scotia.

What do you love most about teaching at Herkimer?

I really enjoy the kids — there are a lot of great kids here, and it’s a great experience to teach them about music.

What advice do you have for current Herkimer students?

Be committed to seeking excellence. Take the risk. We have a sign here that says, “If you’re going to make a mistake, make it loud.”

In addition to teaching, Mr. Gordon plays trumpet as a solo musician and with many local groups. Learn more about his music at terrygordonjazz.com
